A Commune Rhapsody

A Commune Rhapsody is a holistic student hostel in Cambodia that blends architecture, culture, and nature to create an inspiring environment for academic, social, and personal growth. Integrated into a tertiary education campus, the design harmonizes built spaces with lush landscapes, fostering a connection between students and their surroundings.

The architecture incorporates cultural motifs, such as textile patterns, to create a unique sense of place while reflecting local traditions. The form of the building is inspired by Khmer music, with interconnected spaces that promote social interaction and well-being.

A terraced podium houses communal areas like a gym, cafeteria, and lounges, while residential blocks offer study, dining, and leisure spaces. Ecological sustainability is prioritized with natural lighting, ventilation, and locally sourced materials. By combining culture, environment, and social engagement, A Commune Rhapsody transforms student living into a holistic and immersive experience, fostering community and personal growth.

The fluid architectural form echoes a frozen piece of the Khmer music that is characterized by its polyphonic stratification in a lively and improvised style. The spaces are interwoven seamlessly to connect different functional areas together. A free form terraced podium anchors the project, housing communal spaces such as a gym, cafeteria, and social lounges. Beyond that three residential blocks rise above, offering well-ventilated study areas, dining spaces, and leisure zones. The design prioritizes social interaction by incorporating look-out pods, pocket gardens, and open terraces, transforming green spaces into vibrant social realms throughout the building.

The hostel is zoned into three interconnected layers, each catering to different aspects of student life. At the podium level, public spaces serve as the community hub, featuring a dining hall, activity rooms, dance studios and an assembly space. Moving upward is a semi-private environmental deck where terraces, gardens, and decks provide more intimate settings for the residents to connect. The floors above are private and exclusive to the residents of the respective blocks, where bedrooms, study and laundry facilities are housed.

Ecological sustainability is central to the project. Skylights within the podium illuminate interior spaces with natural daylight, reducing energy consumption. Strategic building orientation along the north-south axis minimizes heat gain, while open courtyards and natural ventilation strategies enhance comfort and air circulation. The use of locally sourced materials, such as bamboo and leaves for wall imprints, reflects Cambodia’s architectural traditions while promoting environmental responsibility.
